162. The Small Relationship Moments That Make or Break Trust

October 20, 2026•2 min read

You know those moments when your partner says something that stings, but when you try to explain why, they get defensive or tell you that you’re being too sensitive?

What started as a small hurt turns into a bigger conflict. One person feels dismissed, and the other feels unfairly criticized.

But these moments are also opportunities to build trust and connection.

You don’t have to do something wrong for your partner to feel hurt

Sometimes, something lands differently than we intended. Your partner feels misunderstood or hurt, even though you didn't mean any harm.

It’s easy to respond by explaining your intentions, defending yourself, or pointing out why their reaction seems unreasonable.

But when we focus on proving that we didn’t do anything wrong, we miss an opportunity to help our partner feel heard.

You can know you didn’t intend to hurt your partner and still care that they were hurt.

How to turn a moment of hurt into an opportunity for connection

When your partner tells you something stung, try listening before explaining yourself.

Acknowledge their experience. Get curious about what happened for them. Let them know their feelings matter to you.

This doesn’t mean agreeing with every interpretation or taking responsibility for things you didn’t do. It means being willing to understand your partner’s experience before trying to correct it.

Often, when people feel heard, they become less defensive themselves and more open to working through the issue together.

You can then talk about what happened, how each of you contributed to the interaction, and what you might do differently next time.

Your relationship can help you heal old wounds

Sometimes our reactions are connected to experiences from the past. A seemingly small comment might stir up feelings of being criticized, overlooked, or expected to carry too much responsibility.

But our partners can also contribute to these feelings through the ways we interact with each other.

Instead of dismissing your partner’s reaction as their issue, consider whether something about your relationship dynamic is reinforcing that old pain.

These moments give you an opportunity to understand each other better and create a different experience together.

Small repairs build lasting trust

A strong relationship isn’t one where nobody gets hurt or misunderstands each other. It’s one where both people learn how to find their way back to each other.

When you consistently listen, acknowledge hurt, and work together on doing things differently, you build a deeper sense of trust: Even when we get it wrong, we can work through it. We’re still on the same team.

Want help breaking the same frustrating patterns?

If you and your partner keep having the same arguments and struggle to repair the disconnect afterward, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
